Top Alternatives to the Samsung Galaxy S4

Now that the Samsung Galaxy S4 has been launched in India for Rs. 41,500, most will want to know what it is pegged up against. While many have already made up their mind there are always a few who would want to know what options are out there.

HTC ONE (Rs. 42,990)
If the plastic body of the S4 is bothering your style, and you are not looking to join the heard of the Galaxy Phones, The HTC One with its Unibody Metal design and insanely crisp 4.7inch 1080p screen is the best alternative to the Magical Galaxy. The HTC One has an impressive camera and blazing fast CPU up its arsenal. Unfortunately does not have an interchangeable battery or a SD card expansion.

iPhone 5 (Rs 43,500)
Like it love it or hate it, the iPhone 5 is the preferred choice of many wanting to try this ecosystem built by Apple. More than the hardware, The iPhone depends on the software and the apps eco system and if this is something that excites you, then the iPhone is your choice. Unibody Chassis, 4inch Retina display and one of the best Mobile phone cameras make this an easy target for most buyers. Plus its smaller and easier to hold or pocket.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (Rs 36500)
The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is still a wonder phone and will satisfy a lot of your devilish sins. The Note 2 also has the S Pen which makes productivity easy on a smartphone. There’s the giant 5.5in screen, which pushes it into the contentious grey zone halfway between phone and tablet enabling the market for the so called “phablet”.

LG Optimus G (Rs. 32990)
Comes with a 13 MP camera and a display that would put any full HD smartphone to shame. The LG Optimus G is fast, efficient and light, looks good and a great alternative to the Samsung Galaxy S4, Until the Optimus G Pro is released anyway

920 (Rs. 35999)
The Nokia Lumia 920 is arguably the best Windows Phone device out there, the best built and the most feature full. It also gives the user a break from all the Android madness that is running around. An excellent photosensitive camera, brilliantly clear display and tank like construction, along with almost Rs. 7000 saved make it a considerable option.

Samsung Galaxy S3 (Rs. 28500)
The S4 looks exactly like the S3 to you? then why not just buy the S3? The Galaxy S3 is the most selling Smartphone for Samsung since their Galaxies began to circle the mobile universe. It may be last years king, but its still a great Android device, the most rooted and has possible the maximum number of custom Roms available for it including many that offer over clocking. Great design and a good display are just a few of the things that make this phone desirable. Recent price drops have made it more attractive.

Sony Xperia Z ( Rs 38000)
Guess what this phone has everything plus water resistivity and dust protection. Its like a magical android wonder beast, I also personally like the design, even though it has some aesthetic flaws in being square. The camera is great and so is the design and look, the hardware is top notch and the price is just right. For the typical Indian the phone is also made by a “JAPANESE” company, even though it is still made in China.

Blackberry Z10 ( Rs. 42900)
I would personally not recommend this to you , unless you are a blackberry loyalist, but, the device is still an alternative. Lack of the right hardware, Apps and atrociously high pricing are one of the reasons this Blackberry has failed in India. It still has BBM though

Swype virtual keyboard app finally arrives on Google Play store

Swype virtual keyboard app finally arrives on Google Play store

Swype virtual keyboard has finally arrived on Google Play store after being available as a beta version through the official website site. The Swype app is currently offered at Rs. Rs. 53.83 on the Play store as an introductory offer. The app is also available as a free 30-day trial version.
Swype, taken over by Nuance in October 2011 in a $102.5 million deal, provides typing facility on a touch-screen keyboard. The app allows users to simply drag a finger to input text rather than just tapping virtual keys, also known as slide-to-enter-text. A limited version of the app, however, was available since 2010, and was pre-loaded in various devices. But until today, it was not available as a standalone download on the Play store. Read Swype Beta for Android Review
"Based on the incredible success of our beta program and our vocal customers, we decided to extend the power of Swype to more Android users through Google Play," Mike Thompson, executive vice president and general manager of Nuance Mobile, said in a statement. "Android users deserve the best keyboard — settling for an alternative is no longer necessary."
Nuance further says the team has spent a lot of time researching on how users' input text and their usage styles in order to make the app perfect.
Swype works with four different keyboard characteristics: First up is Swype'r for those who can quickly swipe from one letter to another; Typer for those who uses both hands to input text without looking at the entered text until nearly finished. Tapper for those who keep checking the text while entering and the Dictator for those prefer to speak their message using Swype's Dragon dictation function, available in around 36 languages
Swype supports 60 downloadable languages and 20 dialects. With a wide variety of themes to choose from, users can personalize the look of your Swype keyboard. Download Swype for Android from Google Play store. Also, check out more about Swype app in the video below:

Google X With Android 5.0.1 Shows Up In AnTuTu Benchmarks

motorola

The rumors surrounding the upcoming Motorola X phone just refuse to die! Starting from a LinkedIN job posting, to hardware customization, to a Sapphire Glass display and what not.
Today, we add another rumor to that list, as a leaked screenshot has surfaced online, which shows the AnTuTu benchmark scores of the upcoming smartphone. The image also reveals that the Motorola X Phone might indeed be known as the Google X.
Though there is no authenticity to the leaked benchmark scores, but considering that the rumors surrounding the X Phone have been looming in thee air since quite some time now, we are forced to believe that the smartphone is well in the works.
As per the leaked screenshot, the Motorola X Phone will be running on Android 5.0.1, currently being dubbed as Key Lime Pie. Android 5.0 is expected to be unveiled next month at Google’s I/O event and previous rumors have suggested that the launch of the X Phone will be delayed till August as well. So, the rumors of the X Phone being a Key Lime Pie running smartphone might well be real.

One fact that does question the authenticity of the leaked screenshot, is that the score itself doesn’t look like one from a Snapdragon 800 running processor. Still, as Phone Arena points out, the scores might be taken with a test version of the smartphone.
Previous rumors have suggested that the X Phone will be available in over 20 color options. Earlier this month, an anonymous said that contrary to previous rumors indicating a June/July launch for the Motorola X Phone, the launch date has now been pushed back to August which means that the  smartphone will most probably not show up at Google I/O.
As for the specifications for the Google X (or the Motorola X Phone), they are still far from confirmed but some previous rumors have suggested that the smartphone will come with a 4.7-inch 1080p display, which would be made out of “Sapphire Glass”, which is almost three times harder to crack than the Gorilla Glass.
It’s also being said that the X Phone will be made with rubber bumpers, while the back will be made of carbon fiber and the smartphone would be powered a 2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, which is undoubtedly one of the most powerful CPUs available for smartphones in the market today.
Other specifications of the rumored device include a 4,000mAh battery and IP57 certification, which means that it will be water and dust resistant as well.

Jelly Bean update for Xperia S and Galaxy Note may arrive next month

Jelly Bean update for Xperia S and Galaxy Note may arrive next month

Much to the anger of a lot of customers, Sony did not come good on its promise that an Android Jelly Bean update for the Sony Xperia Swill be rolled out by the end of March 2013. No official communication came along in that regard, with the usual response to forum queries being something in the tune of “we are working on it” and “it will be released soon”.
This time around, French mobile service provider, SFR, the Xperia S will get the Jelly Bean update in May 2013. Interestingly, SFR’s leaked schedule also shows that the original Samsung Galaxy Note is in line for the update at around the same time. These are schedules that SFR will be adhering to. However, rollout of the updates will vary in timings from region to region.
Sony Xperia S was launched in February 2012, and was running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread at that time. Later in the year, the phone got the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system update, and later on it was confirmed that the smartphone is eligible for the Jelly Bean upgrade as well. According to this leaked data, the upgrade will be to Android 4.1.2, and in all likeliness will be the last update for the smartphone.
Samsung had already communicated that the original Galaxy Note will get the Android 4.2 update, which will be the last update for the phone.

Samsung Galaxy S4 to launch in India on April 26

We've got a tip from a reliable source that the much awaitedSamsung Galaxy S4 will be launching in India on April 26, less than a week from now. The source also said the phone will be priced around the same as the iPhone 5 in the country, but it is possible that it could be slightly cheaper than the competitor from Cupertino.
The Galaxy S4 is the latest flagship smartphone from Samsung’s stable and was unveiled worldwide at a launch event held in New York on 14th March. The Galaxy S4 boasts of a 5-inch full-HD super AMOLED display and is powered by a 2600mAh battery. The new Samsung flagship smartphone runs on the Exynos 5 octa-core processor and 2GB of RAM. Graphics are handled by a PowerVR SGX 544MP3 GPU and imaging by a 13MP primary camera and 2MP front camera.
It also boasts some mighty impressive features such Smart Translator, a speech to text and text to text translator that supports 10 languages; Smart Pause, a feature that pauses a video automatically when the user’s eyes move away from the video; S Voice Drive, a better optimized GPS navigation app which accepts voice commands; and Eraser, a feature built into the camera that lets users erase unwanted elements from a captured photo, among others.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 is expected to launch on April 26, and would be available in stores from the next day onward (falling in line with previous rumours of the India launch). We are told that the demand for the phone is pretty high, so if you want to get your hands on the latest and greatest Samsung has to offer, you better keep that cash handy.

HTC Announces Mid-Range Desire L Smartphone

htc desire l

Taiwanese smartphone-maker, HTC has announced it’s mid-range Desire L smartphone in Taiwan. The new smartphone follows the other two mid-range devices that were introduced just a short while back, the HTC Desire P and the Desire Q.
Talking of specifications, the HTC Desire L comes with a 4.3-inch Super LCD2 display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. The smartphone is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor paired with 1GB of RAM, and gets just 4GB of internal storage along with a micro-SD card slot for storage expansion.
The HTC Desire L will be running on Android Jelly Bean, and though the version has been specified, it will most probably be 4.1.2, which will be customized with HTC’s Sense UI overlay. Sadly, the images indicate that the the smartphone won’t be running the latest version of Sense UI, i.e. Sense 5 and thus, will miss out on a lot of the new features.
At the back, the HTC Desire L gets a 5 megapixel camera with an f/2.0 aperture and an LED flash, which is capable of recording videos in 720p.
Connectivity options on the smartphone include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G, while the smartphone also houses an 1,800mAh battery, which might not be enough, considering the fact that battery life on HTC smartphones isn’t as great as some of it’s competitors.
The HTC Desire L will come in white, black and pink color options. There are no details on the pricing and availability of the smartphone as now, but we should hear some more details about the smartphone from HTC soon.

Apple and Samsung battle it out for Indian market dominance

Apple and Samsung battle it out for Indian market dominance

Apple and Samsung have been going at each other’s throats for as long as the smartphone has existed, but the war just got a notch hotter, with the consumer, for once, being the one benefiting. Both Apple and Samsung have shifting their focus to the Indian market, trying to entice the second largest population in the world, which holds the potential to boost either of the manufacturers into the world leader position.
It first started with Apple offering their phones on EMIs to consumers, followed by the company allowing Indian customers to trade in any of their smartphones for a minimum Rs. 7,000 off on a brand new iPhone 4. This was in the very beginning of April, following which Samsung hit back with a 15% cashback on their Galaxy phones like the Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note II the Galaxy Grand and even the Galaxy Tab. The icing on the cake happens to be the fact that the discount stands alongside Samsung’s offer of allowing consumers to pick up any of these devices on a 12-month 0% interest EMI, bringing the monthly expense further down.
This is a result of the fact that a large chunk of the Indian population still continues to use either basic or low-end smartphones, so there are a lot of potential customers for either of the companies. Apple especially had faced a tough time cracking the Indian market due to the lack of Apple Stores and the fact that their devices carry a high initial cost of ownership. The cheapest model of the iPhone 5 starts at around Rs. 45,000, which can be a lot of money to fork out in one go. To counter this, Apple started selling their phones on EMI options directly through certified retailers, which drove the sale figured up really fast, giving them not only a much higher market share, but also tripling profits.
While it is good to see the two companies offer discounts and EMIs, many believe that this is a move to clear out old stocks and make place for the newer devices that are yet to be launched later this year. Samsung has the Galaxy S IV coming out soon, so it would make sense to offer a discount on the S III to move as many units as possible. Same goes for the iPhone 4, which is now a three year old product. No surprise Apple’s trying to get rid of as much stock as possible before they ring in the iPhone 5S (or iPhone 6) later this year. The bottom-line still remains that no matter what the reasoning, the consumer is benefiting. About time too!

Nokia Lumia 620 vs. Micromax Canvas HD A116 : Which Smartphone is a Better Buy?

Rising Indian smartphone maker Micromax pulled the wraps off its flagship phablet Canvas HD A116 more than a month ago. It made record-breaking sales on the first day, with stocks selling out within 15 minutes of its release. And the Canvas HD still continues to be the hottest smartphone in the Indian market, giving a stiff fight to android phones of MNC companies.

On the other hand, the Finnish smartphone, after a little delay in launching the most affordable Windows Phone 8 smartphone Lumia 620, finally hit stores a couple of weeks ago. According to reports, Lumia 620 has begun to rise in popularity among young adults thanks to its affordability.
But will the Windows Phone 8 OS become a weakness for Lumia 620 against popular Android OS-based Micromax Canvas HD A116?
Here is a brief comparison of the main specs between Micromax Canvas HD A116 and Nokia Lumia 620:
Display:
The Micromax Canvas HD A116 shows off a 5.0-inch LCD display IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology with 720px1280p resolution, with pixel density of 294 pixels per inch.
Nokia Lumia 620 sports a smaller screen with 3.8-inch display having 480x800p resolution, but it compensates its shortcomings with its exclusive ClearBlack display technology which assists in viewing contents on the smartphone clearer even with direct sunlight falling on the device.
Processor:
Micromax's Canvas HD's 1.2 GHz quad-core processor makes Nokia Lumia 620 look inferior, as the Nokia smartphone packs a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with 1GHz CPU speed.
With quad-core processor, Canvas HD can do multiple jobs using less energy, thereby significantly increasing the smartphone's battery life span.
Camera:
Micromax's Canvas HD sports an 8.0-megapixel rear-side camera with HD 1280x720p resolution video recording and a 2.0-megapixel VGA front camera.
Lumia 620 may not feature the feature-rich PureView camera like its expensive sibling Lumia 920, but it houses a pretty decent 5.0-megapixel camera with LED support capable of HD 720x1280p video recording, same as Micromax's smartphone.
Mobile Operating System:
Micromax Canvas HD A116 runs on the Android v4.1 mobile OS Jelly Bean. With more than 650,000 apps to choose from, Canvas HD holds the advantage over the Lumia 620, which runs on the Windows Phone 8 OS. Microsoft's latest OS version was released only a few months ago and it houses a tiny collection of a little over 150,000 apps.
Apart from 1GB RAM and battery capacity, Micromax Canvas HD A116 and Lumia 620 have negligible differences.
Lately however, Micromax seems to have hit a road block due to a staggered supply of Canvas HD to the market. Ever since the release of the smartphone, consumers are finding it hard to get a hold of the Canvas HD.
Adding woes to the consumer, Micromax is forced to raise the Canvas HD price from ₹13,999 to ₹14, 499 owing to 6 percent hike in Tax on handsets priced over ₹2000 which was announced on the recent 2013-14 Union budget session.
On the other hand, Lumia 620 seems to have struck a chord with Indian youth, thanks to its peppy dual-colour back-panels and its sub-₹15,000 price tag.
But it remains to be seen if Nokia makes use of Micromax's current predicament to go for marketing blitzkriegs, to showcase Lumia 620 as an alternative cool smartphone to own.

Top five smartphones under Rs. 30,000 (up to April 2013)

Knowing your budget before embarking on the purchase process is as critical as making the correct decision. If you do, kudos to you. If you don’t, we suggest some introspection before doing any shortlists. Post that comes the conundrum of OS, screen size, brand preferences, any fanboy-ish tendencies and the specification sheet scan.
What we have here are the best phones deals, if you have a budget of up to Rs 30,000. We have also given you a link from where you can buy the phone, or you could just walk into the nearest store and check out the prices and the device there, in person.
HTC One X+
The launch of the HTC One saw the prices of the One X and theOne X+ reworked. And at just under Rs. 29,000, the One X+ is a great deal. Packs in a 1.7GHz quad core processor, 1GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage and a 2100mAh battery. Tegra 3 still does more than enough to offer very good gaming performance, if that is what you will use the device for. The 4.7-inch S-LCD2 (720p) resolution) display is one of the better ones around, falling behind to the Galaxy S III’s display only in terms of sheer colour richness. This is one of the few phones in line to get the latest HTC Sense with Blinkfeed, as see on the flagship, the HTC One. Also recommended for a fairly good camera and the polycarbonate unibody ensures very good build quality.
Buy from: Saholic

Samsung Galaxy S III
A very popular phone, and not without reason. The Samsung Galaxy S III was the best Android phone when it was launched, and it still is a very competent device. Where it takes the lead over all the rival smartphones is the “tried and tested” stamp of approval the phone has received over time. Holding up well, in the face of competition from the sleeker and faster phones launched recently. Samsung has the best ecosystem around the phone for accessories, something others haven’t been able to match. The 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display (720p resolution) is by far and away the winner in terms of crispness and colour richness. The only thing that puts off a few people is the plastic build, something most rivals are ahead in.
Buy from: EZoneOnline

Google Nexus 4
The ‘pure’ Android experience is the unique point of the Nexus 4, and it has its own legion of fans. Packs in a quad core 1.5GHz processor with the fairly capable Adreno 320 graphics. The 4.7-inch IPS Plus display (720p resolution) lags a little behind the HTC One X+ and the Samsung Galaxy S III in terms of colour richness, but text readability is remarkable. Pure Android brings in its own unique features like access to certain widgets and apps directly from the lock screen. The build and design is a little underwhelming and some may even say slightly drab. This phone is officially not in India, but that hasn’t stopped some websites and brick and mortar stores from getting in units from abroad and selling it here. Available between Rs 23000 and Rs 32000, depending on the storage options. Do keep in mind, service will be a problem, if something goes wrong with the device.
Buy from: ManiacStore

Apple iPhone 4 (8GB)
Yes, this phone has been around for quite some time now. And yes, some snobbish people scoff at the idea of buying something that isn’t the latest. But, this is a phone that is reliable, works brilliantly out of the box, and is still a very good performer. It is up to date with the latest iOS software available, and that kind of support is not something a lot of other brands can be proud of. Currently, there is a buyback scheme on the iPhone 4, where trading in older phones will get you a massive discount, bringing the price below Rs. 20,000 in most cases – do check that out. Consider this if you want something reliable, and not just blindly crave for the latest smartphones.
Buy from: Snapdeal

Samsung Galaxy Note N7000
The best phablet deal around, something that has been made better with the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update that was rolled out sometime back. The 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display has the 720p HD resolution looked mammoth when it first arrived on the scene, but the popularity of the Note was astonishing. No one can really claim that it is dated, considering the fairly powerful specs and the new OS update bringing in a host of new features. Pick this one up if you need a big display phone. The S–Pen is an added bonus!
Buy from: CromaRetail

While the five phones listed above are the best deals in this price band, there are some other phones that deserve an honourable mention.
Nokia Lumia 820: Possibly the only Windows Phone 8 option for this much money (the Lumia 900 is the other one, but that will forever run the older Windows Phone OS), and while it isn’t the most exciting phone, it does get about its job rather methodically. The Lumia 820's display is very good, and despite a low resolution, impresses in terms of text crispness and readability. Nokia’s Clear Black technology makes for deep black levels, which in turn has a positive impact on the other colours and how they show up. This is the phone to consider if Windows Phone is the OS you want.
BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900: The demographic that seriously needs a physical QWERTY keypad will continue to love this phone. While it has been around for quite a while now, the Bold Touch 9900 still has the best keypad available on any phone. Maybe the upcoming BlackBerry Q10 will better it, but we don’t see anyone else really coming up to this level. It also has a very good battery life, and plays well with the enterprise setups.
