Miramax launched a movie rental app on Facebook, but will eventually expand it into a movie locker for purchased Miramax films.
On Monday, popular Hollywood movie studio Miramaxlaunched a Facebook app that lets users rent movies from within the social website. Currently the studio lists twenty movies costing 30 Facebook Credits each ($3.00 USD) and can be viewed via the Facebook app on a desktop or laptop, Google TV device or Apple's iPad tablet.
"Our goal with the Miramax App is to offer consumers a great user experience where they can watch movie clips and feature length films, play games and share the experience with their friends within the Facebook community," the company said in a blog. "And in doing so, we aim to ultimately build our reach to 150 million+ Facebook friends within the next 18 months."
Miramax indicated that the "Beta" in the player's title will likely stay for a while. Like the Facebook launch, Miramax launched the app with the intention of making changes on a frequent basis, adding fresh content, improved user functionality and more as the service and user base matures. But ultimately Miramax has larger plans in the works for its new app that goes beyond mere renting movies and TV shows in Facebook.
"You’ll notice we launched the App first with just rental VOD — but our ultimate goal is to give consumers the opportunity to buy films and store them in their own cloud-based digital locker — to then access the content anywhere they want, across ALL devices," the blog states. "Yes, that’s right — any PC, smartphone, tablet or TV, whether at home, on the go, on vacation, etc. iPad users can access it at."
Finally, a studio that actually seems to be cheering for the consumer rather than treating them all like potential pirates.
"Sounds like an easy concept – but one that we need multiple partners to help support to make possible," Miramax added. "To that extent, we encourage our industry peers to join us in this vision – including the other great digital retailers and technology companies of the world. The time is now to make cloud-based movie ownership a reality for consumers."
We couldn't agree more, and that future begins with the initial launch of its Miramax eXperience app which can be accessed here. The current library of 20 movies includes Pulp Fiction, Spy Kids, Sin City, Clerks, Chicago and a few more (what? No Freddy or Ghost Face?). The library really needs work, but at least it's a start in the right direction.
