Google Earth Hits 1 Billion Downloads Milestone

The application was first introduced back in 2005 as a "free 3D mapping and search product."
The idea behind Earth was to utilize satellite data that Google acquired with Keyhole to create a map of the world that could be used much like a video game. Since then, Earth has become the de-facto standard for the virtual world in 3D, and provides data that goes below the surface into the oceans, up into space to the Moon and Mars, as well as countless 3D-rendered cities on the ground.
Earth has also become the foundation for flight simulators and the creators of the Grant Turismo 5 video game recently noted that they used Google Earth data to make their race tracks more realistic.
