Is the PlayBook's Android app player finally on the way?
Research In Motion's PlayBook tablet has been scheduled for an update to bring Android app support for a long time. Originally set for a summer release, RIM delayed the update, which will also bring other important features, until later in the year. Now it seems as though we might have a more solid time-frame for when that update might arrive.
According to Engadget, the over-the-air update will be among the stuff RIM has planned for its developer conference next month. Apparently RIM spilled the beans during its earnings call, detailing that the update set to bring the Android app player, native email, calendar, and contacts apps (the PlayBook launched without these PIM functions), as well as the BlackBerry Video store, will arrive next month. The company also plans to show off the QNX developer platform as well as some QNX-based handsets that are currently in the testing stage.
Late last month, Bloomberg reported that RIM could enable the 2012 BlackBerry's to run Android applications, too. Citing three people familiar with the plan, Bloomberg said that, starting in 2012, RIM will introduce QNX-based Android compatible BlackBerrys. As far as we know, RIM didn't comment on these reports when discussing its developer conference, but we imagine we'll learn more about the possibility of Android apps running on the QNX BlackBerrys at DevCon next month.
