ZoomIt wouldn't exactly be a stretch to say that the iPhone and its smartphone competitors have revolutionized the way we communicate. A quick look around the room in a restaurant will reveal quite a few people with smartphone devices, many of which might be an iPhone. The iPhone has become a huge step forward in modern technology but most people wouldn't have expected a similar concept to come from Apple back in the 80s.ZoomBack in 1983, Hartmut Esslinger, the man who came up with the idea for the Apple IIc (Apple's first portable computer) also came up with an idea for what would later become the infamous iPhone. A whopping 25 years prior to the release of the insanely successful iPhone, Esslinger had the idea for a multiple-use, touch-screen based phone.ZoomIt may not be able to do all of the things today's iPhone can, but this early version was able to do some incredible stuff. For example, the user in the photo was able to write a check and balance his checkbook with the use of the touch screen and included stylus. Another photo reveals a virtual keyboard that replaces any physical buttons. Of course, Esslinger's version was tethered to the wall thanks to the phone cords and 80s technology, but it's still interesting to see what the forefather of the iPhone looked like back in the day.
