We are still waiting for a non-iPad tablet that can touch the sales numbers of Apple's blockbuster tablet, but that does not keep one market research firm from raising its tablet shipment forecast through 2015.
IHS predicts that 275.3 million tablets will be sold in 2015, up from about 60 million this year. This is substantially up from the 242 million unit estimate IHS issued in February of this year. The estimate for this year is slightly up from 58.9 million tablets, while we should also note that the firm predicted 67 million units for 2011 last year.
Given the ongoing failure of non-iPad tablets, this new estimate may be somewhat confusing. However, IHS said that the increase is mainly based on the success of the iPad. Apple is expected to account for 74 percent of tablet sales this year (44.2 million iPads)and keep the lion's share of the market through 2013. In 2015, Apple is forecasted to sell more than 120 million tablets and hold a share of 44 percent. Imagine, at an average sales price of $600, 120 million tablets could turn into a $72 billion market for Apple, if IHS numbers will become reality.
IHS said it reduced the shipment forecast for non-iPad tablets. “Makers of tablets using Android and other operating systems are encountering slower-than-expected sales for their products and facing other challenges, including lagging development of content and applications for their products,” IHS wrote in a press release.
