MICROSOFT is finally making its Xbox Music streaming service available to non-Windows users. For free.
Well, at least for customers who use its browser app.
Until now Xbox Music only ran on Windows Devices and Xbox but yesterday the music streaming app was made available on Apple and Android devices as well as on the web browser of your choice.
Xbox Music works roughly the same way as Spotify. It is free on your desktop though you will have to put up with ads and after six months Microsoft puts a cap on how many free songs you can stream per month. You can also stream unlimited music on your computer and mobile device for a monthly subscription fee.
Until recently the app mainly appealed to gamers who could stream music through the app on the Xbox App Store. But this was unlikely to convince users to move to a Windows device just to be able to access its music streaming service. Making the streaming app compatible with Apple and Android devices will help Microsoft to increase its market share and compete with other streaming services.
The announcement came just two days before Apple's iPhone 5S launch where it is rumoured it will release a music streaming service of its own.
