Smartphones running Ubuntu OS will arrive in October

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, smartphones running on the open-source Ubuntu operating system will hit stores in October this year. Ubuntu is devoped by Canonical and it’s founder and CEO Mark Shuttleworth has told WSJ that Ubuntu OS smartphones will be available starting October 2013.

Shuttleworth also mentioned that a ROM based on the Ubuntu OS for smartphones, which is optimized for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus would be available by the end of this month.

Earlier, while officially unveiling Ubuntu OS for smartphones in January 2013, Canonical said that the smartphone running on the upcoming operating system would arrive by early-2014, but now it seems that the release date has been shifted and the devices would be coming sooner.

Though there is no confirmation on the countries in which the Ubuntu-running smartphones would be launched, but Shuttleworth did mention that the smartphones would be available “in two large geographic markets”.

It seems that the year 2013 is going to be a big year as far as smartphone operating systems are concerned. The battle in the smartphone OS space is set to get intensified with many new upcoming operating systems scheduled to make entry in the market this year. Leaders in this space, Android and iOS are surely in for a tough time as other  big players like BlackBerry and Microsoft would be hoping to increase their market share. BlackBerry has already rolled out it’s latest BlackBerry 10 OS while on the other hand, Microsoft would be looking to further refine it’s Windows Phone operating system. 

Also, many new smartphone operating systems are slated to be launched this year which include Mozilla’s Firefox OS, developer preview phones for which have already been announced. Tizen OS, which is being co-developed by the South Korean electronics giant Samsung and the chip-maker Intel will also be  seen running on smartphones from Samsung this year, as announced by the company.
