The best of CES 2013: All the stuff you’ll crave for this year

Finally, the CES madness is over. All the devices which will set the base for the future of gadgets have been unveiled. We guess now is the time to sit back and pick up the best of what we saw at the biggest electronics show in the world, which now secretly all of us do desire! From TV’s to Gaming devices to Hybrid PC’s or any goddamn gadget on the face of this planet- we’ve had it all  at the Consumer Electronics Show. So here we are, listing the best of what we’ve seen at the CES and what we think, would drive the next generation of devices in the world.
  • Ultra-HD 4K TV’s (Also, RIP 3D)

Samsung’s 85-inch Ultra-HD 4K TV
Hands down, the biggest attention grabbers at this year’s CES were the 4K TV’s from the likes of Samsung, Sony and LG and the best of the lot has to be Samsung’s 85-inch Ultra HD 4K TV with floating design. You can go on and on about the beauty of 4K but Samsung took it to a completely new level with the design of this TV. The metal frame surrounding the screen allows it to be moved up and down giving the TV it’s “floating design” and what’s more? The metal frame houses the speakers as well, so you never have to worry about connecting your TV to an external sound system for that complete luxurious experience. Though, this piece of art would cost a bomb, but if you have that insane amount of money, we recommend you order one of these as soon as they’re out.
Sony 4K OLED TV
If Samsung showed us brilliance in design, Sony told us what “seeing is believing” actually means. Sony’s prototype 4K OLED TV would leave you spellbound at the first glance. It was so brilliant that it was hard for us to imagine, what more would we see in the world of TV’s in this lifetime.
Also, worth mentioning is the fact that it’s about time the 3D craziness was laid to rest. We’ve had a plethora of devices boasting of 3D capabilities last year but all that was overshadowed with the arrival of 4K and we guess now we have the right direction in which the future of TV lies.
  • Gaming on-the-go just got redefined

Nvidia Shield
Little did we expect that the chip-maker Nvidia would roll-out something so brilliant that might just change the way we’ve played games on-the-go. Project Shield from Nvidia was a completely new and fresh take at the mobile gaming world. Powered by the company’s newly announced Tegra 4 processor, the Shield is certainly a gaming powerhouse while giving you a pure Android experience with full access to the Google Play store and also allowing you to stream games from your PC. Kudos, Nvidia!
Razer Edge
Razer managed to introduce the only other gaming which made us stand up and applaud. Razer showed off the Edge, a mobile PC gaming device which can easily play almost all the games you have on your PC without breaking a sweat. This gem of a gaming device runs on Windows 8 but on the downside, is priced a bit on the higher side with a starting price of $999. But hey, passion knows no budget, right?
  • Tablets galore, as expected!

Vizio MT 11X
The world is headed in this direction and we knew that CES would throw a gazillion tablets at us. But, one tablet which we thought stood apart from the rest of the crowd was the Vizio MT 11X. Yes, we know that here in India, we might never be able to get out hands at this device (well, officially) but that shouldn’t refrain us from giving Vizio it’s due. In the world of the iPad(s) and Nexus(s) and Surface(s) , Vizio manages to deliver a beautiful 11.6-inch Windows 8 running tablet, that is powered by AMD’s new Z60 mobile processor and get’s a stunning Full HD display. It isn’t just the specifications which made us fell for this one, but the fact that this tablet won’t dig a hole in your pocket considering Vizio’s reputation of delivering products at an affordable price.
  • Hybrid Laptops/All-in-PC’s

Lenovo ThinkPad Helix
Lenovo showed us the best laptop-tablet hybrid at CES 2013- The ThinkPad Helix. Prior to the ThinkPad Helix, the ultra-thin laptop-tablet hybrid computers always lacked something. If somehow, anyone did manage to get all the goodness inside one device, it was sure to make you shell out a lot of your moolah. The ThinkPad Helix changes everything. For a price of $1,499 you get a 11.6-inch Full HD, Windows 8 running convertible which gets powered by Intel Core i7 processor and all the power rests in the tablet and not in the dock. The ThinkPad Helix will be available from next month and would surely be a benchmark for any device which falls in this segment.
Asus Transformer All-in-One PC
This year’s CES brought us a lot of interesting All-in-One PC’s and Asus managed to show us one device which was smart and quite practical at the same time. Come in, the Asus Transformer All-in-One PC. This AIO PC from Asus comes with a 18.4-inch detachable display and the best part- It runs on both Android Jelly bean and Windows 8. When the display is docked in the base station, the device works in the desktop mode running on Windows 8 and being powered by Intel Core processors and giving the users 1TB of storage space. However, remove the display from the base station, press a button and Voila! In less than a couple of seconds, you’d see the device running Android Jelly Bean and giving you 16GB of storage space. Smart!
  • The next breed of Superphones have arrived!

Sony Xperia Z
2012 unleashed the quad-core at us and things only had to get better from there on. This year, Sony has come out as the first manufacturer to release it’s flagship smartphone for the year 2013- The Sony Xperia Z. Sony has been going great guns after parting ways with Ericsson and the Xperia Z is clearly the first device from it’s stable that could challenge the might of Samsung when it announces it’s flagship smartphone. The Xperia Z boasts of a 5-inch 1080p display, 2GB RAM, 13 megapixel primary camera, 16GB internal storage along with a micro-SD card slot and the powerful quad-core processor underneath.
But that’s what every flagship device is expected to sport this year, right? So, what sets the Xperia Z apart? Well, the fact that it is water-resistant till a depth of 1-meter and dust proof, adds to the ruggedness of the device and might be an edge over it’s rivals. It’s too early in the day to predict anything as we have MWC coming up next month but nonetheless, Xperia Z is clearly is big step forward by Sony.
  • Bendable smartphone displays take another step forward

Samsung bendable screen
Rumors were in the air that Samsung might just surprise by introducing smartphones with bendable screens this year. Though, that wasn’t how it turned out to be but Samsung did show us a glimpse of what the future of smartphone displays most probably is. Showing a prototype running Windows Phone 8, Samsung demoed how it was possible to wrap around screens around objects to display information on the. Though, it’s still a long way to go before such screens are available for commercial use, but it’s surely enough give us hope that it’ll be a reality soon.
  • A Gaming revolution in the making

Oculus Rift
The Oculus Rift has brought to us the most amazing virtual reality experiences we’ve ever had. Despite the fact that only a low-resolution prototype was put up for testing, the Oculus Rift gave everyone who tested it, such an experience that it might just end up being the most anticipated product in 2013. The Verge goes on to say that “it’s most revolutionary gaming experience we’ve seen in years”. There is no word on it’s availability as of now, but the developer community will get a hold of the device sometime in March and then later this year, Oculus might just give us some good news.
