Sony has joined the mid-segment ultra-book league with its latest Sony Vaio T SVT11113FGS priced at Rs 49000 and powered by Intel’s 3rd gen processor. Does it match its hype?
Design
In terms of design, the Sony Vaio T SVT11113FGS is an absolute beauty. The top lid has a brushed aluminium finish with a Vaio logo, in chrome, in the centre. There is an aluminium strip on the top end of the lid, other than that, everything is silver. The Sony Vaio T SVT11113FGS is only available in silver.
Overall, the all metal body has great ergonomics and feel to it, with well laid out panels and connectivity ports.
Sony has paid attention to detailing, with small things such as the wrap-around power button which is visible even after closing the lid providing a nice touch.
As far as the build quality goes, the Vaio T is excellent. no squeaking parts, loose hinges. The lid is nice and sturdy as well.
The only good thing about the keyboard on the Sony Vaio T SVT11113FGS is that it is backlit. In order to cut down the size of the ultrabook, Sony compromised the size of the keyboard, making it cramped and very uncomfortable to use. Keys are small, and will take some getting used to, especially if you migrate from bigger laptops to the Vaio T.
The trackpad is large in size and has a multitouch surface, with gesture support. It has dedicated left and right keys making for a pleasurable usage experience. There is no visible separation between the keys, but the response is excellent. Right at the middle, above the display are a 1.3 megapixel webcam and a microphone.
With Gesture Control, you can control media playback, web browsing and slideshows by waving your hand in front of the webcam.
There are two tiny rubber stubs on either side of the keyboard, along with a long rubber strip on top of the screen frame to protect the screen itself from rubbing against the keyboard and palm rest.
Hardware and Performance
The Sony Vaio T SVT11113FGS come with Intel’s 3rd generation Core i5-3317U Processor clocked at 1.70 GHz powered with Turbo Boost up to 2.60 GHz- and does a great job at handling multi-tasking and graphic intensive processes. Add to that the 4GB DDR3 SD RAM on-board the T Series which makes the ultrabook a great performer overall. We got a score of 3427 in PCMark 11 Overall benchmark, which puts it at par with some of the best performers in it’s category.
In terms of graphics, the Sony Vaio T SVT11113FGS has an Intel HD Graphics 4000 Card, which can handle most graphic intensive apps/processes with ease.
The 500GB hard disk is complemented by a 32GB SSD to make for a hybrid solution. It caches frequently used data for speedy booting of the OS and quick launching of applications and recovery from sleep. On average, it took 3-4 seconds to come out of sleep.
the Sony Vaio T SVT11113FGS also features 2 USB ports, one of which is a USB 3.0 port (which provides charging utility for mobile devices, even when the ultrabook is switched off!), besides having a multi 3-in-1 card reader and a LAN port.
The Sony Vaio T SVT11113FGS has a 11.6″ TFT LED Backlit display, which has a resolution of 1366 x 768. It is crisp and the high pixel density means that texts look sharp and there is no visible pixelation. Brightness on the screen is excellent and the anti-reflective coating is a welcome addition. Outdoor visibility however is average at best.
To be honest, even despite all the impressive attributes of the screen, we could not help but be disappointed with it. The size, we feel, is too small for an ultrabook in this price bracket. The large frame bordering the screen make it seem even smaller than it is!
Software
The Sony Vaio T SVT11113FGS comes with Windows 7 Home Premium preinstalled, with Sony providing its own software bundle with the ultrabook. Sony has provided various apps such as Vaio Gate, Vaio Smart Network and Vaio Gesture Control. Vaio Gate is a launch pad that can be pulled down by pushing the mouse pointer towards the top of the screen, which to be honest gets irritating after a period of time.
It also comes with Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 and Microsoft Office Starter 2010, Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2012 (60-day trial version), and so does Norton Online Backup. It is worth noting that it comes with Microsoft Office Starter 2010, and not the entire kit.
Mutlimedia
In terms of Audio, the Sony Vaio T SVT11113FGS is an average performer. The speakers aren’t loud, and even at moderately high volumes, audio becomes shaky. The quality of the audio too is barely satisfactory.
Video playback is good, with full HD videos running effortlessly, but as we mentioned earlier, a larger screen size would have been much better for the multimedia experience.
Internet browsing however is excellent, with the browsers rendering quickly, and text and other content being displayed nicely due to the high ppi.
In our tests, the battery lasted us around 3.5-4 hours of usage, which included word processing, internet browsing, some HD videos and slight gaming.
Conclusion
Overall, the Sony Vaio T SVT11113FGS is an ultrabook which combines beautiful exterior with powerful interior. The build quality and design is excellent, and the performance of the processor is at par with it’s competitors, with it’s impressive benchmark scores as proof. But where Sony lets us down with this ultrabook is it’s screen size and speakers.
In the end, the look, feel and portability are excellent pros, but with the cons mentioned – it does put an end-user off a bit.
We can certainly recommend this product based on its merits, but only hope that there will be some marked improvements in the next releases.
