Hoping to make it’s own space in smartphone segment currently ruled by Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS, Mozilla has unveiled two new developer preview phones running on the Firefox OS. Mozilla had announced a long while back that it’s building an open-source Firefox OS for smartphone and now it has unveiled Keon and Peak smartphones developed by a Spanish manufacturer Geekphone in association with the mobile operator Telefonica.
Firefox had already declared that it won’t be building it’s own hardware to run on Firefox OS, but would let OEM’s use the new operating system. The two new phones announced by Mozilla will be used to test the Firefox OS till the Final version is released later this year. Both the developer preview phones would go on sale starting February, but there are no details about the pricing yet.
Coming to the phones, Keon is the lighter of two devices being powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 1GHz processor paired with 512MB of RAM and sporting a 3.5-inch HVGA display. The Keon gets a 3 megapixel primary camera but misses out on a front-facing camera and comes with 4GB of internal storage with a micro-SD card slot for storage expansion. The smartphone gets all the standard connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.
The Peak on the other hand is a more loaded smartphone and is powered by a 1.2GHz Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor alonf with 512MB of RAM and sporting a 4.3-inch qHD display. The device gets an 8 megapixel primary camera along with a 2-megapixel front facing camera. Just like the Keon, this device also comes with 4GB of internal storage and a micro-SD card slot for storage expansion.
Mozilla will surely try and pitch these device in emerging markets where the entry and mid-level devices are more popular and hope to dent the sales of smartphones running on Android OS and later, venture into a high-end smartphone to take on the like of iPhone and other high-end Android devices.
