The Xperia U, which doesn't launch until 2Q12, will be the most colorful of the batch, providing exchangeable bottom caps. Specs will include a 1 GHz dual-core STE U8500 SoC, 4 GB of storage, 512 MB RAM, a 3.5-inch scratch-resistant TFT touchscreen, a 5MP camera with auto-focus and 16x digital zoom, a front-facing camera for video calling, an FM radio with RDS, 3D surround sound and Android 2.3 "Gingerbread."
The beefier Xperia P also launches in the same timeframe, packed with a 1 GHz dual-core U8500 SoC, 16 GB of storage, 1 GB of RAM, an 8MP camera with auto-focus and 8x digital zoom, a 4-inch scratch-resistant TFT touchscreen, and Android 2.3 "Gingerbread." It will also feature a front-facing camera for video conferencing, a precision crafted full aluminum unibody, WhiteMagic technology, anFM radio with RDS, and HDMI output.
"Brightstar's ability to serve national and regional operators will enable Sony Mobile Communications to reach a wider audience with its Xperia smartphones," said Marcelo Claure, Chairman and CEO of Brightstar. "We look forward to bringing innovation across the country, especially to underserved communities."
Brightstar's North American distribution network leverages more than 450,000 square feet of warehouse facilities and provides support to tens of thousands of points of sale in the United States, the company said. The Xperia smartphones from Sony are expected to become available through Brightstar's extensive distribution channels this summer.
