Project Darpan allows content access in 6 local Indian languages

Intel has joined hands with GoDB Tech to put forth the ‘Project Darpan,’ which is a multilingual graphical interface (UI) initiative that will help simplify the computing experience for people. This project has been initiated to increase the broadband penetration in India and also enable people to access India relevant content in local languages, which will further help monetizing for content providers. So, basically, the project works towards data or content access for people in a simpler manner and in the Indian language they understand.

Project Darpan, a software application has been crafted after an intensive research study conducted by Intel to explore ways to improve usage of computing devices among masses. Presently Darpan has been made available at no charge via the Internet. Darpan will offer menus/ commands of Darpan application in 6 languages – English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, and Telugu. Users can download it from www.darpan.me/info or accessed directly from www.darpan.me through Google Chrome Browser. 

Based on research data from varied sources, about 128 million urban and 305 million rural people in India do not understand English. So, basically there have been content limitations, due to an English interface and more than 70 percent of Internet users prefer to consume local language content. It also strived at taking off the fear of technology that prevents Internet usage and computing in India. 

Narendra Bhandari, Director APAC, SSG of Intel, said, “Project Darpan will help Indian users who are often scared to use computers due to lack of relevant content and fear of English. Project Darpan will take away this fear by providing an easy access to Indian internet content in a simplified manner. Project Darpan will create an ecosystem of content providers and innovative software companies which will impact the consumption of internet content in a big way, thus by fuelling a local language content ecosystem spiral. This initiative will also explore robust business models for all the ecosystem players and will benefit the end consumer immensely."
