Skype is throwing the doors to free internet access wide open again, this time in New York City during New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Going to be in the New York City area during New Year's Eve? Skype has teamed up with Skype WiFi partner Towerstream to give New Yorkers and visitors free Wi-Fi access to the internet starting noon on December 31 (Saturday) until noon on January 1 (Sunday).
To connect to the free city-wide network, users will simply need to look for "Skype WiFi" when scanning for access. The catch is that they'll need the latest Skype client installed on a Windows or Mac device, or the latest Skype WiFi app for iOS.
"Once connected with Skype WiFi, you can make a Skype video or voice call, surf the web, send an email, check your friend's updates or hang out online," Skype said in a blog on Thursday.
Neighborhoods located within the Skype WiFi network include Times Square, West Village, East Village, South Village, Greenwich Village, NoHo, SoHo, Lowe East Side, Clinton, Chelsea, Union Square, Midtown, Midtown South, Murray Hill, Stuyvesant Park and Turtle Bay.
"New Year's Eve is all about connecting with those who matter most to you,Skype is thrilled to once again help you maintain these meaningful connections as you ring in 2012," the company said. "A Skype voice or video call with friends and family overseas or even across town is the next best thing to being there."
Skype previously granted free Internet access in airports around the nation from December 21 through December 27.
