Take a very hungry little monster. Make him cute. Dangle candy in front of him. And voila, you have Cut the Rope. The game is primarily strategy based starring 'Om Nom', the adorable little creature that we hoped to have as a pet when we were little. He's hungry, and you want to feed him. The only problem is that the candy is being held back by ropes and there are obstacles like bubbles and spiders. You need to cut ropes in just the right way so the candy lands square in Om Nom's mouth. He then gives you that look of immense satisfaction, the kind that validates the frustration of getting the rope wrong. Cut the Rope is available across platforms for iOS and Android for $0.99 (approx Rs. 49).

3. Fruit Ninja - iOS, Android
Did you hate it when your mom made you eat fruit as a kid? Alternatively, have you ever been booed off a stage with fruit flung at you? Here's a game that will help you gain some pseudo-revenge. As the name suggests, you're a ninja. Fruit is being flung at you and your job is to slice and dice them with your ninja sword. You get extra points for fruit combos and you need to be careful of bombs. As you progress, you will please the fruit sensei who will keep delivering fruit facts to you. Fruit Ninja is available for iOS for $0.99 (approx Rs. 49) and Android for Rs. 62.03.

4. Doodle Jump - iOS, Android
Doodle Jump revolves around a character called, "The Doodler". The point of the game is to make The Doodler jump levels without falling by tilting your phone. Since the game is supported across various devices, including those that don't have tilt support, there is also an option to tap The Doodler in the direction that you want it to go in. The Doodler can have power ups like jet packs and propeller hats that help it go faster for a short distance and obstacles like monsters and aliens that the Doodler needs to avoid. You can choose various themes for the Doodler to jump around in and his enemies look different but the purpose of the game remains the same, JUMP! Doodle Jump is available across multiple platforms for $0.99 (approx Rs. 49).

5. Temple Run - iOS
Ever get caught up in an Indiana Jones fantasy? Not that this game is a direct play on the franchise but it does bear similarities. In ways that are cool. Your protagonist is a runner running on temple grounds, collecting coins, going over gaps in the ground and under tree branches, to eventually complete a set of objectives. The objectives include running 5000 meters, collecting 1 million points and running 500 meters without collecting any coins. And a lot more of course. The speed on this game is heart racing and you will not have satisfaction till all the objectives are completed. Just be careful of the creatures that chase you when you trip on a branch. They can be nightmare inducing. Temple Run is only available for iOS so far for free.
7. Stupid Zombies – iOS, Android
Well, the fact is being the “living” dead does imply a certain lack of brain functionality so a stupid zombie is actually a redundancy. In this game, like any of the hundreds of movies, books, series, video games, what have you, your duty is to kill Zombies. As usual you’re equipped with very limited ammo - it’s never easy is it. Using either direct shots or ricochets off of pilings or walls, you need to make sure you nail every one of those critters dead. It’s quite interesting especially with cool rag-doll effects and blood splatter thrown in to add a little “reality” to the game. Stupid Zombies is free on the Android market and priced at $0.99 (Rs. 49) for iOS handsets.

8. Asphalt 6: Adrenaline - iOS, Android
For the racing fans the Asphalt series has been big on the mobile circuit, pardon the pun. The latest edition to the franchise is Asphalt 6: Adrenaline which showcased some pretty cool graphics and we recommend running this only on higher end devices for better performance and smoother gameplay. As usual you’re a street racing maniac who races for cash and cars and this latest version also includes the totally radical Audi RS 3 Sportback. Other cars can also be unlocked as you progress through the stages and various outdoor arenas using gyroscopic controls for driving. On the iTunes Store, Asphalt 6 is available for $0.99 (Rs. 49) and it’s Rs. 340 on the Google Android App Market.

9. Cut the Birds – iOS, Android
Now here’s a game that seems quite familiar and yet it isn’t. Cut the Birds is an amalgamation of Fruit Ninja with the now insanely popular Angry Birds characters. The object of the game is to slice, or in this case “slice” the rather “angry looking” birds before they fly in to your screen. Of course it’s not as simple as it sounds and one must beware of nasty bombs flying around as well that look a little too much like those exploding black birds I’m sure most are familiar with. As the game progresses the birds increase in number as you can imagine and although not as visually creative as the others mentioned, it does manage to stay entertaining for long stretches. Cut the Birds is available for free for Android as well as iOS devices.

10. Words with Friends - iOS, Android
Words with Friends is a sort of socially based mobile game. Think of it as Scrabble with online partners. It’s a cross platform game that allows Android and iOS users to play with each other irrespective of what OS they’re using. You simply sign up with a valid email address and you can play against other users who might be in your contact list. It’s a simple UI with colorful keys and an easy to use system. One could also think of it as a sort of crossword puzzle being played with online users. The best part is it’s free for all users.
