Battery Tech Generates Electricity Using Vibrations

MicroGen Systems creates small battery that is powered by environmental vibrations.
Battery technology continues to take enormous strides in advancement as years of research are poured into increasing efficiency of batteries. Over the years we have come to see more and more developments in battery research that allow for unconventional ways to maintain a battery charge.
MicroGen Systems' latest battery breakthrough is a great example. The new MicroGen battery technology allows the battery to harness power from vibrations such as a car driving down the road. This power can then be used to operate low-power devices such as an automobile's pressure sensor.
The vibration harnessing technology involves a vibrating cantilever made out of a piezoelectric material. This material is capable of generating electric potential that can create 200 microwatts of electric power, enough to charge a thin-film battery that is around the size of a postage stamp. Although MicroGen's latest development in battery tech is focused on low-power sensors such as a vehicle's tire pressure sensor, perhaps further developments will result in a wider range of applications.
