3D, the new age craze!

3D is a term that almost everybody is familiar with today. If you are one of those few individuals who have never heard of it, here's something that will ring a bell - James Cameron's AVATAR! Remember Chhota Chetan - the first 3D film of India, released as 'My Dear Kuttichatan' in 1983 and re-released in Hindi as Chhota Chetan in 1997. Both times it topped the charts and achieved blockbuster status.

There are numerous reasons why 3D is here to stay. Apart from its success at the box office, its technology and its viewing experience, there's the fact that it's simply AWESOME!!

Its emergence can be traced all the way back to the rise of photography, when a genius named David Brewster invented the stereoscope in 1844. Louis Jules Duboscq further improvised on this invention and took a 3D picture of Queen Victoria herself that became very famous after its   display at the Great Exhibition in 1851.
In your face visual media! Literally!

The 3D craze would have reigned supreme if not for WW1 and WW2 that made people lose interest in its dynamic potential. 1950-1960 is the actual golden era when 3D technology was at its best as 3D cinemas captured the attention of the masses and generated huge profits. “Bwana Devil” was America's first colour 3D feature length movie that gave 3D technology a whole new meaning.

India's own 'Chhota Chetan' ripped through the charts to reach the top and grossed millions. Scepticism aside, there is no denying the fact that the public loves it. Since then 3D technology has grown to what we see today. As far as limitations are concerned, they arise only because of the dearth of 3D content available as compared to other kinds of media. But with the coming of portable video cameras capable of capturing life in 3D, this problem is soon to be solved. Why do we seek to watch only commercial movies in 3D? Why not record our own videos in 3D? Isn't that worth a thought?

Let's take this thought a step further. With technological giants now incorporating every kind of media technology into new age mobile phones, what if we were to bring 3D technology to fit into your palm? A mobile phone, which could not just play, but even record 3D movies and capture 3D stills - now that would be something. The phone can always have the usual 2D features for common use. We know technology exists to completely do away with the need for 3D viewing glasses. There's no reason why this technology cannot be made to fit into a smartphone touchscreen. It sounds fantastic and the day isn't too far away.
