Concept USB Flash Drive Doubles Up As an AA Battery

The only flash drive that can power a flash light!
ZoomThanks to the technological advancements in flash storage over the years, portable USB drives have gotten smaller and smaller, allowing them to be cleverly concealed in everyday objects like safety pins orcufflinks. While it certainly makes sense for a flash drive to be integrated into something you wear on your body, designer Wonchul Hwang thought up an intriguing alternative.ZoomDubbed the AA USB, this usb flash drive concept doubles up as a rechargeable AA battery. While the drive is plugged into your computer and gobbling up your data, its internal battery is gobbling up some electricity to store for later. In the emergency event that you happen to need a single AA battery, the AA USB has you covered.
In addition, if the AA USB runs out of juice, an internal crank allows you to manually charge it by twisting a portion of the battery. Although there isn't a massive list of gadgets out there that can make use of a single AA battery, the concept has some interesting potential. Perhaps if the AA battery could double up as a small capacity USB charger, this little device could become a geeks best friend.

More iPhone 5 Parts Leaked From China

Leaked iPhone parts photo confirms a few previous rumors.
ZoomLate July and early August have been busy times for the iPhone 5 rumor mill. With the September announcement inching closer and closer, more photos and videos appear, detailing everything there is to know about the upcoming device. By now, we'd say it is petty safe to assume the new iPhone will besporting a longer screen, capable of displaying 5 rows of icons on the home screen as opposed to the current 4.

Now, another leaked photo is making its rounds from Chinese forum iColorOS. If the photo turns out to be real, it could prove to be a clear confirmation of the information reported from the previous video released by iPhone parts manufacturer ETrade. In addition to confirming screen dimensions and design, the photo also backs up some other rumors, such as a new micro-SIM card slot and smaller home buttons.

With all of the rumors buzzing about, we can now paint a possible picture of what's to come: a longer, stronger scratch-resistant screen, miniaturized dock connector, 5 rows on the home screen, two-tone metal casing and updated speaker arrangement. However, if history has shown us anything it's that we can never be too sure. We'll just have to wait until the rumored September 12th announcement to find out. Until then, expect more rumors and leaks to generate additional buzz.

Acer's Touch-Based Aspire S7 Ultrabook Arrives Soon

Acer's sleep Aspire S7 Ultrabook with an optional touchscreen will arrive next month.
ZoomSlashGear reports that Acer's Aspire S7 Ultrabook will arrive in two sizes on store shelves by the end of September, starting at $1,465 (£1,149.99). Both will initially come packed with Windows 7 given that Windows 8 won't become available until October, but will be geared more for Windows 8 users thanks to the optional touchscreen.
Acer will reportedly offer the Aspire S7 in 11.6- and 13.3-inch models, the latter of which will feature the company's new "white glass" finish it touted during Computex 2012 back in June. The base specs will include an Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor, 128 GB of SSD storage, and 4 GB of RAM. Other features will include HDMI, USB and memory card reader ports, a 9- or 12-hour battery cycle (depending on the model), and a backlit, light-sensing keyboard.
For those who want a little more than the base configuration, both Aspire S7 models will provide additional options including more RAM, greater storage space, upgrades to Core i7 CPUs and more. As previously stated, touchscreens will be an option as well, likely jacking up the overall price quite a bit. Both will reportedly sport Acer's new Twin Air cooling system to keep the Ultrabooks from heating up your lap, and a sleek aluminum metallic unibody design.
"The new S7 range are singular ultra-mobile devices that blend performance, aesthetics and user-friendliness, giving modern day explorers the most complete and satisfying computing experience," Acer said back in June. "The larger model additionally sports a glossy, sculpted glass cover, delivering a trendy and elegant appearance."
So far Acer hasn't released an official announcement, so stay tuned for confirmed specs and an actual street date.

iMac, Mac Pro Rumored to Drop Optical Drives

Specific notes in Mac OS X Mountain Lion's configuration files are hinting to an update for Apple's iMac and Mac Pro desktop computers. The files make note of unreleased iMac (iMac13,0) and Mac Pro (MacPro6,0) models, both of which are now expected to drop the optical drive altogether.
AppleInsider notes that Apple's Boot Camp Assistant "references the plist to display a listing of newer Mac models with EFI-level support for booting a legacy operating system from a USB flash drive." Of course, that is a feature already supported in today's models, but the explicit description suggests that Apple may be specifically targeting a bootable Windows 7 volume from an image file - and not a DVD anymore.
The file references disk drive free systems such as the Mac mini and the Macbook Air at the same, time which fuels rumors that Apple could be taking the step of ditching legacy optical drives. We know that Apple isn't shy of killing technology it does not believe or want anymore. It did so with the floppy drive in the original iMac. Back then, Apple already played with an "iDrive" as a cloud storage product in 1998, which did not work that well due to the lack of generally available broadband connections.
Given broadband speeds today, as well as cheap flash mass storage, it is not unreasonable to believe that Apple may be considering the departure from the optical drive. It would even support its business model in an effort to move its users to the iCloud service.

Lenovo announces its Windows 8 tablet, the ThinkPad 2

It is no surprise that several hardware manufacturers have been preparing their arsenal of Windows 8 tablets, with the release of the OS being just round the corner. However, Lenovo is the only one so far that has officially announced what it’s about to offer to the masses.

The ThinkPad Tablet 2 has been confirmed byLenovo and is slated to replace the currentAndroid toting tablet. The ThinkPad 2 has been confirmed to rock an Intel Atom processor along with a 1,366 x 768 IPS display, a 10-hour battery, optional 3G / 4G, micro-HDMI output, a 2MP front-facing camera, an 8MP rear camera, and NFC capabilities all packed into a somewhat slim 9.8mm thick tablet.
There apparently also going to be a finger print scanner on the tablet, along with a pen which can be stowed away in a slot on the tablet itself.
Lenovo’s said that the tablet would launch sometime in October, in line with the release of the next major OS from Redmond and Co., but there is no word on pricing so far.
While Lenovo might be the only hardware manufacturer with an official Windows 8 tablet out there, they aren’t the only Windows 8 tablet out there. Microsoft has already announced that roughly 20 Windows 8 tablets are in the works from various manufacturers.
Microsoft has revealed its intention to make its own tablet, the Surface, which will come in two flavors, one with an Intel processor and one boasting Nvidia’s Tegra 3 chip. The Lenovo ThinkPad 2 and the Surface tablet are both slated for an October release.

India among top nations to Google search on education: Survey

Google India's recent survey reveals that India is among the top countries when it come to the volume of search queries related to education on Google. In fact, India ranks second, and is just behind the U.S. The study further reveals over 60 percent of the Indian students who have the Internet access use the Google search to research information related to courses and institutes.

IT and vocational courses are most searched topics followed by MBA and engineering colleges. The study further reveals that Indian students spend about five to six months on researching before making their final decision on the institute they want admission in. The survey is comprised of Google search query patterns and an offline research conducted by TNS Australia. Out of 2,229 survey respondents, 52 percent were female and 48 percent male. The respondents belonged to 18-35 years age group. The survey was conducted across seven Indian cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
Google's survey also showed that along with the popularity of smartphones and usage of the Internet on the go among the Indian students, as majority said they wanted the educational institutes to have mobile-friendly websites. About 66 percent of the students said they accessed the online content via their mobile phones. Another interesting finding of the survey is that majority of the students want more videos as part of their research about educational institutes. About 56 percent wanted to have videos on career and placements, while 44 percent looked for videos on faculty.
“With over 60 million Internet-user population in India being in the age group of 18 to 35, educational-related search queries are exploding on Google. Our core objective behind compiling this study was to understand the impact Internet is having on this young population with regard to education related decision making by the students,” says Google India's VP and MD Rajan Anandan.

ClearTrip App for iOS

  • Cleartrip-for-ios-336-2.jpg

'

In the beginning there was the Web and Web pages looked simple, and were dominated mainly by what the authors wanted to write or express. Along came menus, ads and other cluttering material that made a royal mess of one’s browsing experience. And this has been especially true of travel sites which are riddled with so much, that one often loses sight of what one was searching for in the first place.
There are some travel sites and services, however, that try to stand out from this clutter and one of them is ClearTrip which in almost Google-like fashion has decided to keep things simple, and stick to flight bookings. The site is all about giving you the best flight options between two locations in India or abroad - all you have to do is enter information about where you want to go and from where and the site gives you the best options. There are a few bells and whistles too, but what marks ClearTrip out is its speed and clear interface - getting some good flight deals does not harm either.
And fortunately, the ClearTrip iOS app does not compromise on these core values. The app is available as a free download from the iTunes App Store and at 1.4 MB is a very light download. Launching the app provides you with the option of choosing the two cities between which you travel - the app can also sense which city you are in, if you give it permission. All you need to do is pick the cities (the app suggest name options even as you type in a neat touch), the date of your journey, and the number of travellers and hit the “Search flights” button and the app promptly shows you the flight options available, giving you the option to sort them by duration, time and price. To get to a date ahead or before, simply hit the arrow to the right or left of the date (see what we mean by elegant interface?). You can also choose to filter the results based on the kind of flight you want, and by carrier.
The interface of the app is clean and simple with large numbers and letters.

Once you have chosen your flight you can go right ahead and book your tickets, either by entering your credit card details or by using the site’s Expressway system where you enter your credit card details just once and then get one-click bookings, saving you from the hassle of entering the information again and again. It all works quite beautifully - we love the way recent searches are shown when you slide the screen to the left! You can also access details of your previous, as well as booked trips once you register (registration is free). And best of all, all this is done through a neat, simple interface with large letters and numbers, which makes the entire task of booking a flight very easy indeed.
Enter your destination and where you are travelling from and the app will show you different flights between the places.

Mind you, the app is not quite the finished product yet. For one, it allows flight bookings only within India at the moment (we hear an update will give you more options in the coming days). For another, it does miss some of the features of the website - most notable is the absence of including Travellers, which lets you enter the details of other people who travel with you just once on the site, saving you the hassle of entering them again and again in the app. There also seemed no way of importing our Facebook profile from the app or sharing travel plans with Facebook friends (again something we could do from the website) We also heard some grumblings from seasoned travellers that the deals offered were not always the best, and that some rival services had better options. We cannot comment on that - these are very early days and we have not travelled enough using the app to draw conclusions.
You can filter your results based on the kind of airlines you want, time of travel, etc.
But all said and done, ClearTrip’s iOS app avatar reflects the site’s elegant interface and ease of use. Yes, it could get better. And we are sure it will. If you are a person to tends to fly often within the country, do all your flight planning yourself and have an iOS device, then no app makes the process as smooth as this one.
Get it from: iTunes App Store
Price: Free
You can review your itinerary and fare break-up - once again, note the elegant interface.

Google adds Gmail messages to search results

Google on Wednesday announced various changes to its search, including the expansion of its Knowledge Graph, integrating results from users' Gmail account, and adding voice search to its mobile app for iPhone and iPad.

Google had introduced Knowledge Graph in May. The feature brings in a snapshot panel on the right of search results, showing information related to users search query, similar to what Bing offers. Google has announced Knowledge Graph will be rolled out across the world (only for English speaking users for now).
Google will also be adding a new interactive carousel, which will be featuring relevant lists and collections for various queries. Google says the feature will help users who are looking for information on multiple topics.
"So far we can produce hundreds of thousands of lists involving millions of items, and we'll keep growing to match your curiosity," Amit Singhal, senior vice president of Google Search, wrote in ablog post Wednesday.
On integration of Gmail into search results, Google says the move is aimed at making the search “truly universal”. Moreover, Google has started to add some users' personal Gmail messages to their search results as a part of “limited trial”. The information will appear on the right column of the search results page.
"Sometimes the best answer to your question isn't available on the public web — it may be contained somewhere else, such as in your email," Singhal wrote. "We think you shouldn't have to be your own mini-search engine to find the most useful information — it should just work."
If you are interested in participating in this trial, sign up here.
Also, Google has announced adding voice search to its app for iPad and iPhone. The app is already available for Android devices. To use the feature, users just need to tap on the microphone icon and ask their query.
For example, ask “What movies are playing this weekend?” and you’ll see your words streamed back to you quickly as you speak. Then Google will show you a list of the latest movies in theaters near you, with schedules and even trailers.
The feature best “works for everything from celebrity factoids to the height of Kilamanjaro and more. When Google can supply a direct answer to your question, you’ll get a spoken response too”, explains Singhal in the blog post. To know more about the app, check out the video below:

Windows Essentials 2012 Now Supports Windows 8

Windows Essentials 2012 takes advantage of Windows 8 advancements.
Microsoft's Brad Weed announced on Wednesday that an updated version of Windows Essentials 2012 is now ready to download and install, packed with support for the upcoming Windows 8 platform. More specifically, Movie Maker and Photo Gallery for Windows 7 and Windows 8 now have added capabilities that utilize many of the advances offered in the newer OS slated to arrive in October.
For starters, Movie Maker now takes advantage of "major advancements in hardware accelerated graphics" in Windows 8 with the use of video stabilization. "Wobbly" videos taken with phones and smaller video cameras can now be smoothed out using this option. Users simply choose between three selections: anti-shake, anti-shake and wobble correction (low), and anti-shake and wobble correction (high).
Movie Maker also now allows users to insert music from AudioMicro, Free Music Archive and the Vimeo Music Store. Once inserted, users will be greeted with a visual audio track in wave form under the video frames so that they can see where the song ends within the clip. A third track has also been added for narration in video or audio format if needed.
"With sound coming from three different sources, the audio of your movie may be hard to hear," he said. "So, we’ve added some ways to choose which form of audio you want to emphasize. This makes it easy to clean up and enhance the audio for your entire movie project with just a single click. With enhancements to audio and music support, we’ve made it easy to find, add and control both music and narration."
The new Movie Maker also includes new text effects, and saves video in the h.264 format by default. "Now Movie Maker saves to this format by default making it easier to publish your video to popular sharing websites, managing your videos and your files between services and devices," Weed added.
As for Photo Gallery, Weed emphasized that "Windows Photo Gallery is the number one way to organize, fix, find and share your photos and videos" in Windows 8. The app has been updated with a cool Auto Collage feature which crams seven images together to make a unique wallpaper-like arrangement. Vimeo is also now the official publisher for both Photo Gallery and Movie Maker so that Windows 7 and Windows 8 artists can share their creations to the world.
"We’re hope you’re as excited as we are about the new Windows Movie Maker," he concluded. "We’ve listened to your feedback and have added better audio support and finer control within the storyboard. Our new music partners make it that much easier to bring your videos to life with great music that is optimized for making movies. With video stabilization from Windows 8 and other features that help you refine and share your creation, Movie Maker brings you one step closer to being the awesome filmmaker you always knew you were."
